Welcome to Fairfield- Alabama
"An Older City Moving in a New Direction"

Fairfield is a city located in Jefferson County- Alabama. In 1907- the Tennessee Coal- Iron- and Railroad Company (TCI) planned the town of Corey for 15-000 of its employees. The town was originally named for a TCI executive but was quickly changed to Fairfield. Founded as a model city- Fairfield is still something special. "Fairfield is an older city moving in a new direction-" a slogan still proudly boasted today. Today- the city of 13-000 has even more reasons to feel special. Recent years have sown seeds for success- with a revenue base that has grown more than 80 percent in the past few years from $4.6 million to more than $8 million.

Government

The city is governed by a Mayor and City Council. Six council members are elected from districts- while the Mayor and Council President are elected at large. City Hall is located on Gary Avenue.

Education

An investment in school and programming is an investment in the future - a fact of which the City of Fairfield is quite aware. The independent school consists of three elementary schools- a middle school- a high school- and a vocational school. Miles College and Jefferson State Junior College offer courses in the city's high school. Within a fairly small radius however- there are many other institutions in the surrounding area: Bessemer State Technical College- Birmingham-Southern College- Samford University- and the University of Alabama at both Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Recreation
Fairfield's four parks are major assets. A two-minute walk from almost anywhere in the city- these parks help make Fairfield a true garden spot of the South. Nearby recreational opportunities include Gulf Coast beaches- Appalachian Mountain hideaways- historic sites- and some fine lakes (nearly one million acres of lakes).

Census Information

As of the 200 census- the population of the city is 12-381. The city has a total area of 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²). 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. There are 4-600 households out of which 34.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them- 35.6% are married couples living together- 28.4% have a female householder with no husband present- and 31.7% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
