Fairfield City School System’s Department of Student Services Mid-Year Progress Report
The Fairfield City School System (FCS) has committed to providing holistic support (academics, career, social/emotional, etc.) and intervention services for all its students to ensure their success. A main objective of this Department is to eliminate the serious achievement gap for identified students who are high risk of dropping-out of school. Providing the necessary support system to enhance student achievement leading to an enhanced graduation rate is the primary goal. This department includes guidance and counseling, truancy services, parenting skills, graduation coaching and 504 students services.
FCS has mobilized its principals, school counselors, truancy officers, graduation coach and a special education (emotional disturbed students) teacher to work cooperatively to identify and service the needs of those high risk dropout students in grades k-12. The system has employed a part-time expert consultant per this grant as well. The respective school counselors have identified two hundred and eighty two (282) high risks students based on attendance/truancy, behavioral and poor grade issues. Individual student profile plans have been developed to document the student services/progress. Students have been receiving individual/group counseling. The truancy officers have been addressing attendance/tardy issues with schools and parents. No students between the ages of seven(7) and seventeen(17) are to walk the streets of Fairfield during school hours. The police department and business have been very support. In order to learn, students must attend school daily/timely. A FCS Dropout/Truancy Prevention Advisory Council has been established composed of community stakeholders. FCS has also created a male mentoring program composed of male employees and business representatives. The purpose of this program is to unite responsible males within our community who share a passion for providing mentoring and tutorial services for our male students. A dress tie day (each Wednesday) for the males have been established. Positive self esteem, respect, responsibility and civic pride are taught. Students are also taught how to tie the dress tie. The symbolism of the dress tie in becoming formal in our mind set and action is critical. Weekly guest speakers talk to the students. We will be starting a similar program in January for the young female students.
Lastly, we will be establishing a parenting program effective, January 25, 2010. This program will train/ assist parents with coping and changing destructive adolescent behavior. This is a nationally recognized program called “The Parent Project, Inc”. It is a ten(10) week extensive training program for parents and students. The books and materials were just ordered. We recently received explicit training through the State of Alabama Department of Education (Dr. Kay Warfield).
Respectfully,
Dr. Gordon Fears,
Director of Student Services, et.
